No glare
Barcodes, QR codes and photos read better without reflections.
Fingerprints
Matte hides fingerprints better than gloss.
Colour
Colours look slightly softer than under gloss; very saturated brand colours can look muted.

Matte pairs well with a raised UV logo or a foil accent for contrast.

When not to pick matte
If your artwork is photographic and needs maximum punch, or you want water to bead and wipe off, gloss is a better match. Dark solid colours can show scuffs on matte, so test a sample if the label is heavily handled.
